Baby needs a prelude


The journey before parenthood is an exciting one, packed with memories and opportunities to celebrate new life. It starts with a gender reveal that builds anticipation,  maternity photos that build hype, and a baby shower that's all about the final stretch. Each moment has its own mood and vibe. And the baby shower is all about mama, baby, and baby's siblings. Sorry dads! It's not your day, but I promise there's at least a small spot for you, too.


As you plan for your baby shower, consider discussing these seven must-have memories with your photographer. Like any event, baby showers come and go. And making a checklist of your must-have memories will ensure that you remember your special day with incredible baby shower photography.

1. The little details (before guests arrive)


Baby showers are surprisingly similar to bridal showers. Chances are you have invitations, signage, table settings, centerpieces, flowers, decor, favors... I really could go on. Expect your Miami baby shower photographer to arrive early to capture these details before guests arrive. Unlike the food, guests won't eat your decor. But they will set their bags down, make themselves comfortable, mingle with others, grab some goodies, and generally make it difficult to get well-composed shots of all the hard work you put into decorating.

2. The food and drinks (also before guests arrive)


While this may not apply to every baby shower, some venues have caterers handing out cute tapas and hors d'oeuvres. Others might have all of the food out in an extravagant display. The food may not be the star of the show, but it usually ties in with the decor and theme of the baby shower. Unlike the decor, guests will eat the food. It's up to the baby shower photographer to wear the food photographer hat and take pictures of the food before they have bitemarks.

3. Mama and her family


Maternity photos are usually done prior to the baby shower. Most showers will actually have printouts of the photos as decor on the tables. Still, a baby shower is a great opportunity to get more maternity photos in a different setting. Or, if you haven't taken them before your baby shower, it's the perfect opportunity to carve a few minutes out of the event to take get those done.


The baby shower is also the perfect time to take group photos with the family members who matter most. This could include grandma, sisters, cousins, nieces, etc. If it's a co-ed baby shower or if dad is making an appearance, consider including him and all the other important men in your life.

4. Candids of guests


There's no better way to capture the fun and energy of a bridal shower than with candid photos. All the love, laughter, hugs, and special moments — you can only capture those when guests aren't expecting to pose and smile in front of a camera. That's why good bridal shower photographers blend in and use long lenses to capture the candid energy from a distance without making guests feel uncomfortable. And moms love seeing the genuine reactions, toasts, and interactions that they may have missed while enjoying their day.

5.  The cutthroat baby shower games


That bottle of wine tied to a Bath & Body Works Champagne Toast candle prize isn't going down without a fight. This is my favorite time to shoot in every baby shower. Adults and kids alike show their fun, competitive sides as they try to guess mama's belly measurements or how many beads are in a bottle. The excitement and hype makes for some of the day's most energetic moments.

6. The cake & desserts


The cake is always a center of attention at a baby shower. It deserves a photo or two. It's also worth catching a few photos of people enjoying their desserts, especially the kids!

7. A few creative shots to end the event


It used to be common to see dad come in at the end of the baby shower to open gifts with mama. It was an easy way to close out the narrative for the day with a few final shots of the couple together. But I've noticed many moms are leaning toward a more relaxed end to the day, often opting to open presents at home instead. Without a formal way to end the event, your photographer will need to get creative to capture a vibe that turns down the energy of the event. These pictures can include a stack of presents, guests saying goodbye, or even a final portrait.

Final thoughts


Baby showers move quickly. Between welcoming guests, playing games, and taking group and solo photos, there isn’t much time to slow down and truly take in each moment. Relying on phones or asking a friend to “snap a few pictures” often means missed reactions, blurry images, and missed moments.
