There's something very real about an off-camera smile
It's family photo day, and mom and dad are rushing to get their little ones ready for the shoot. "Make sure to smile for the camera and be on your best behavior", says mom and dad. They want everything to be perfect. Perfect smiles. Perfect poses. Perfect eye-to-lens contact. While posed photos can look beautiful up on the mantle or on the Christmas tree, the most memorable and impactful photos happen when no one is trying to pose at all.
Candid photography captures real life, its messiness and its chaos. And in all of that, there's real, raw emotion that you just can't get from the perfectly posed shots: laughter, movement, emotion, and spontaneous moments that simply can’t be staged. That’s why candid photos so often become the images families treasure the most.
Real emotion over perfect poses
Some things just can't be posed. Can a family of three be posed perfectly, smiling at the camera? Absolutely. With the right posing and direction, that picture can be beautiful.
But a candid picture doesn't catch a pose. It captures a moment. Moments like greeting your bridesmaids and close family members at your bridal shower. Moments like your daughter running to you, while she kicks up sand into the salty air by the shore. These pictures don't just capture what you see (like in posed pictures). They capture your family's story and the emotions you feel during those moments.
Less poses also means a funner photoshoot
Who wants a stressful Miami photography session, anyways? It should be laid back, relaxed, and easy. Instead of worrying about stiff poses or perfect angles, families are encouraged to move, play, laugh, and interact naturally.
Of course, some families might be self-conscious about certain things or have some expectation to look good in pictures. Don't worry. It's up to the photographer to guide you and direct you through these candid moments to make sure you're also showing your best sides.
This is you and your family's opportunity to let go and relax. You'll be glad you did when your family pictures show just how much fin you were having. Many parents are surprised by how enjoyable a photo session can be when the focus isn’t on constantly stopping and posing, but on simply existing together as a family.
My approach to family photography and event photography
I'm not a perfectionist. I'm not worried about where your right elbow goes or if a rogue strand of hair is slightly off. My goal is to make sure each picture feels perfect (not look perfect) by gently directing you through natural movement and authentic connection for your family, not posting you into unnatural and awkward poses.
I want to capture the moments where you're laughing, smiling, and reminiscing in the best moments you've spent together. So that it doesn’t feel like a formal photoshoot — it feels like quality time together.
