I recently shot a surprise proposal on Miami Beach, and it had everything (and then some). Jorge (our groom-to-be) set up a beautiful white runway full of white roses. Everyone was in on it: friends, siblings, parents... But the bride-to-be was in for a wonderful surprise.  Here's how I covered this beautiful Miami surprise proposal from setup to celebration.

The setup



The groom's uncle was on the third floor of their condo, waiting to walk me to the beach where the proposal was about to happen 20 minutes later. The groom's setup featured white roses in the sand, a white runner, and a flower arrangement overlooking the ocean. As usual, I took detail shots Detail shots of the setup. If the groom planned every piece of it, it was worth taking photos (plus, it was genuinely beautiful).

Before the Question



While the groom waited at the spot (along with the rest of the anxious friends and family), I took a few photos of him from a distance. Those nervous minutes are part of the story and they're worth capturing. I stayed hidden until the bride-to-be met with her future groom. As the couple walked up, I ran up to them to capture her face the moment she realizes what's happening. This is the whole reason to hire a surprise proposal photographer.

The Proposal



For proposals, I'm always shooting: him on one knee, the yes, the ring going on her finger, the first kiss and embrace as a newly engaged couple. No posing or interruption, I make this as real as possible with that Miami documentary style photography locals love.

Ring Photos and Celebration


Most clients opt for an engagement shoot right after the proposal. But this couple brought their friends and family along (they were all in on it after all!). They specifically wanted photos with everyone. I took their posed family photos and many in-between moments full of hugs and happy tears.

Quick Engagement Shoot


Before everyone headed up to the afterparty, I took the couple aside and let them know I still had 45 minutes left with them. They would have been remiss to not take a few engagement photos. They really wanted to, but only had time for one photo. Luckily for them, I work very well under pressure. I told the groom to pick her up, take her close to the water, spin her, dip her, and run her back. It was golden hour on Miami Beach after all, we couldn't miss it!
