A couple of months ago, I got a call from someone in Mexico who wanted to travel for a surprise proposal at Miami Beach. We talked for a bit about where he should propose and decided that South Pointe Park Pier was the place for them. Honestly, good choice. It's one of the best proposal spots in Miami Beach. There was actually another proposal happening just 5 minutes before he popped the question.


After the proposal, we followed it with an engagement session on the beach and at an iconic lifeguard tower nearby. Here's how the shoot came together.

The Setup and the Proposal on the Pier


South Pointe Pier works so well for surprise proposals because I can blend in with the tourists and photographers already out there. I arrived 20 minutes ahead of time, coordinated timing with the groom by text, and waited with a long lens while the couple walked out onto the pier like it was a normal vacation night out.


I suggested beforehand to the groom-to-be that he should take a few selfies with her and then ask her to look out to the water for a "dramatic photo."  When she turned around, he got on one knee, and I was already shooting. I caught the moment she turned around after the fake photo from a distance, and then ran in to get their expressions and embraces.


Right after the proposal, they called their families to share the news. I always keep shooting through these in-between moments: the happy tears on a FaceTime call are just as much a part of the story as the ring.

A Quick Stop at the Jetty



South Pointe Park Photography is iconic. One of those iconic spots includes the black rock jetty. It wouldn't be a Miami engagement photoshoot without a couple of shots here.

Engagement Photos at the Lifegaurd Tower



South Pointe Park sits right on the sand, so we walked over for a mini engagement session to the lifeguard tower. The red-and-white lifeguard tower made a perfect Miami Beach backdrop. I posed them on the stairs and the deck, keeping directions simple and playful so everything felt natural.
