There's nothing like a surprise proposal session. Sure, engagement, family, and couples sessions are exciting. But there's nothing more special than capturing a truly genuine reaction when she turns around to find him on one knee.
I photographed this surprise proposal at Patch of Heaven Sanctuary in Miami, FL. If you've never been, I 100% recommend checking it out (even if you're not proposing). It's a gorgeous hidden gem tucked away between Kendall and Homestead. It’s the kind of place that makes you forget you’re in Miami — surrounded by tropical greenery, koi ponds, winding paths, and lush canopies overhead, it feels more like a secret garden than anything you’d expect to find in South Florida.
For a surprise proposal, it checks every box. The winding paths give you natural cover so your partner doesn’t see the camera until the moment is right. The lighting filters through the trees beautifully. And every corner of the property has something stunning to photograph — from the long reflection pool with the stone Buddha in the background, to the koi pond tucked behind the trees where he actually got down on one knee.
If you’re looking for a proposal location in Miami that doesn’t feel like every other spot, this is it.
He had a ring and a plan. She had no idea about the ring, the plan, or the photographer hiding just around the corner.
He brought her to Patch of Heaven under the guise of a nice day out (they also have a Thai restaurant on site that I hear is delicious). I was instructed to stay hidden around the koi pond.
Tip: You have to come up with whatever you can to make sure your significant other is dressed right for this momentous occasion. Honestly, you can even tell them you hired a photographer for a couples shoot and then pop the question whenever the moment is right. This avoids any logistical mistakes that may pop up when trying to find a place for your photographer to hide.
I hid in a corner amongst some trees, a pair of bromeliads, and a tiny spider resting on its web while I waited for him to get on one knee. He told her to take a video of the beautiful scenery (a smart way to get her to turn her back).
That was my cue.
The second he got down on one knee, her hand flew to her face. You could see the exact moment it hit her. She turned to look at him and he was already reaching out with the ring, smiling like he’d been waiting for this moment for a long time. Because he had.
It was up to me to make sure I took a photo of every reaction (his and hers) and the moment he puts the ring on her ring finger.
But wait! I was also informed by the staff (prior to the proposal) that there's a beautiful lookout just a few feet above the koi pond. I asked the newly engaged couple to live the moment again for one final proposal photo op.
After the Proposal...
Once the shock wears off and the tears (and laughs) settle down, what you’re left with is pure joy that shines through in the engagement shots that come right after.
I spent the rest of the session documenting them as newly engaged.

Here’s what you need to know:
Book your photographer early. Once you have a date in mind, lock in your photographer first. Good proposal photographers in Miami will even help guide you through the process, inform you about permits, and give you some tips. I can't stress this enough. There are a lot of details people miss by not consulting with a photographer first. This couple almost couldn't get their photos done because they didn't know a permit was required (I helped them figure it all out).
Pick a location with natural cover. Patch of Heaven is great for this because the paths and trees give your photographer somewhere to stay hidden until the moment happens. Your partner won’t spot a camera before you’re ready. Again, if you need help with this, your photographer can provide location ideas.
Have a believable cover story. A “couples photo session” works perfectly because it explains why you’re dressed up and headed somewhere scenic. It also means your partner shows up looking great in the photos.
Bundle an engagement shoot. Don’t just capture the proposal and call it a day. The 30–45 minutes after — when you’re both giddy and relieved and happy — produce some of the best images of the whole session and will work as your engagement photos, too.
