This session was with a family of six — two parents, four kids ranging from toddler to preteen — shot at a lush outdoor location in the Kendall area. I say lush, but you'd never guess this was shot right here in Kendall Indian Hammocks Park. What to Wear for Large Family Photos in South Florida
Coordinating outfits for six people is one of the biggest stressors families mention when they reach out. The goal isn't matching, though. In, fact, if your clothes is too matchy-matchy, your photos will look dull and boring. You want everyone to feel like they belong in the same photo without looking like they're part of an Old Navy set. This also makes things so much easier. Instead of trying to find the same exact garment in 5 or 6 different sizes, focus on colors and style instead.
Pick a palette, not a uniform
This family nailed it: earthy neutrals like tan, sage, dusty pink, white, soft blue with no two people in the exact same color. The mom's floral dress tied everything together and dad's simple grey henley and tan pants grounded it. The kids each had their own thing going on, but it all read as one family.
For large family photos in Kendall or the broader South Miami area, stick to softer, muted tones. They photograph beautifully against green foliage and the beach without competing with the light. Avoid bright white on everyone (it can blow out in Florida sun) and skip head-to-toe black unless you're going for a very formal look.
Always Remember to Dress for Florida
It's South Florida. Even in the cooler months it can be warm and humid. Lightweight fabrics, breathable cotton, and linen blends are your friends, especially with little ones who will run, be held upside down, and possibly sit in the dirt. Leave the heavy layers for indoor sessions.

In South Florida, light is everything. The wrong time of day will make even the best location look harsh and unflattering.
Golden hour is almost always the right call
The hour before sunset gives you warm, flattering light that makes skin tones glow and backgrounds pop. For Kendall-area sessions, that typically means starting between 5:00–6:30 PM depending on the time of year. This matters especially for large families because the light works with you instead of against you, no squinting, no harsh shadows, no one looking washed out.
Morning sessions are underrated
If your kids are early risers or nap schedules make afternoons unrealistic, morning sessions (7–9 AM) can be just as beautiful. The light is cooler and softer, and kids are often in better moods before the day wears them out. The trade-off: you have to get six people ready by 7 AM. You know your family.
Avoid midday
Midday light in South Florida is brutal. The overhead, flat lighting is unforgiving. Unless your session is in deep shade the entire time, skip it.

This is the part every mom with little kids wants to know about. How do you get usable photos when your toddler is a feral creature and your older kids have decided today is the day they're too cool for family photos?
Let Them Move
Posed, still shots are harder to pull off with young kids, and they're usually less interesting anyway. Movement is where the magic is. Let the toddler run toward dad. Let the siblings roughhouse a little. The best images from this session came from moments that weren't planned: a big sister flipping her little brother upside down on the trail, a dad with one kid on his shoulders and three more climbing him like a jungle gym.
Give them something to do
Telling kids to "just stand there and smile" is a fast track to glazed-over eyes and stiff grins. Instead, give them tasks: "chase mom," "whisper a secret to your brother," "can you pick up your little sister?" This family was naturals at it. the connection between the siblings was already there. I just needed to get out of the way and let it happen.
Embrace the imperfect moments
The photo where the toddler is making a face? The one where two kids aren't looking at the camera? Those are often the most real and sometimes the most loved. Parents always tell me afterward that the in-between shots end up being their favorites.
You're not trying to get a perfectly still group of six humans to all blink at the same time. You're trying to capture how your family actually is. That's a very different and much more achievable goal.
Oh, and Feed them beforehand
Not joking. A hungry kid is a miserable kid. So is a hungry husband. Make sure everyone has eaten before the session, and bring a snack as a bribe/reward for after. You know your kids and what they like, so use that information.
Don't Skip the Couple Shots
When you have four kids, it's easy to focus the whole session on the family and skip the couple photos. Don't. A few minutes alone with your partner (while an older sibling wrangles the kids) almost feels like you're on a short date, but with new photos you can print to hang on your wall later.
For this session, we carved out about 10 minutes while the kids explored nearby. The parents went from "stressed about getting everyone to cooperate" to completely relaxed in about 60 seconds. The Kendall area and surrounding South Miami suburbs have some genuinely beautiful natural settings. You don't have to drive to the Keys to get lush greenery and great light. Look for locations with tree canopy (it diffuses the light beautifully), open paths for walking shots, and enough space for kids to move around without immediately running into each other.
This session was shot at Kendall Indian Hammocks park. The nature trails have a dense tropical forest feel — Spanish moss, big live oaks, palms, and winding trails. The green backdrop made the outfits pop and gave the whole gallery that earthy, organic feel.
Individual Kids' Portraits Are Worth It With a Big Family
With four kids, individual portraits can feel like a lot. It's actually one of my favorite parts of a large family session. It's just a few quick solo shots of each kid, just being themselves. No posing, no "say cheese." Just personality.
Parents with multiple kids often tell me the individual portraits are the ones grandparents ask to print. Makes sense, too. It's rare to see each kid as their own person, separate from the group.
