There is something unmistakably South Florida about arriving at a Catholic baptism on a muggy, warm Florida morning. The sky already a saturated blue with clouds ready to burst contrasted the serene royal palms swaying overhead and bright white stucco facade of St. Raymond Catholic Church. Just minutes from Brickell, Miracle Mile, and Coconut Grove, this beloved parish has been the site of Catholic baptisms, first communions, quinceañeras, and weddings for generations of Miami families.

02 - The Gathering


Before the Baptism Ceremony —

The Family waits in Faith & Anticipation


The moments before a Catholic baptism ceremony begins hold a particular kind of quiet rarely found in the bustling Miami.


Miami Baptism Photography isn't a science. Some things stay the same: every ceremony expectedly waits in anticipation of the sacrament; families find their pews dressed in their finest suits and dresses in creams, burgundies, and navy; the baby, dressed in white, is passed from arm to arm as if already belonging to everyone in the room. But the lead-in is rarely consistent...


The priest, robed in white vestments embroidered in gold, opened the Catholic baptism rite with a calm authority let us know that the prior ceremony was running behind. Fifteen minutes after the scheduled time (and almost 100 photos of the family patiently waiting), the ceremony begins. He addressed parents, godparents, and the full congregation — each of whom is asked to make promises on behalf of the newly baptized child — before the family moved toward the baptismal font.


As a baptism photographer serving Miami and Coral Gables, these are the candid frames I prioritize: the glance exchanged between parents, the grandmother lifting the baby up to peek at the priest, the godparents standing tall with that mix of joy and solemn awareness of the role they are being asked to fill. 03 · The Sacrament


At the Baptismal Font — The Most Sacred Moment of a Catholic Baptism in Miami


Every Catholic baptism in Miami builds toward one central moment: the pouring of water at the baptismal font. The priest poured holy water over the child's head while the godfather held the baby steady. Some babies cry. Others flinch. But in this baptism, baby decided to make a splash.

04 - The Light


Lighting the Baptismal Candle — The Godparents' Promise at a Miami Catholic Baptism


One of the most visually striking moments in any Catholic baptism ceremony is the lighting of the baptismal candle. A white taper is lit from the Paschal candle, the large Easter candle that burns near the altar at St. Raymond Catholic Church, and presented to the family as a symbol of the light of Christ now alive in the newly baptized child. Many Miami Catholic families keep this candle to relight on the anniversary of the baptism each year: a small, portable piece of sacred memory.


Before the godparents could step forward with their lit candle, in true baby fashion, the baptizand couldn't help but savor the candle first. The godparents then stepped forward together to light the candle, their faces turned upward toward the flame, both of them wearing wide, genuine smiles. With St. Raymond's stained glass windows warmly arching behind them, and the baptismal font glowing in the foreground, it was one of the most naturally beautiful compositions of the entire Miami baptism session.

After the baptism ceremony at St. Raymond Catholic Church in Coral Gables, the family moved the celebration to Casa Juancho in Pequeña Habana. The restaurant's rustic wood-beamed interior, warm exposed brick walls, and candlelight made the perfect backdrop for what came next: an afternoon of food, wine, laughter, celebration, and unhurried conversation.


The long communal table was dressed beautifully: white linen, tapered candles, glasses of red wine, and low arrangements of white tulips and greenery running the full length. There is a particular kind of joy that fills a Miami restaurant when a family gathers to celebrate a baptism together. It is looser than the reverence of the church, louder, but no less genuine.
