I recently photographed a basketball-themed 5th birthday party at Game Point Miami, an indoor basketball court and event venue in Miami. Here's a look at how I cover a kids birthday party from start to finish as a Miami event and family photographer.

Venue and Party Details



I always arrive early to photograph the venue and party details before guests show up. At Game Point Miami, that meant wide shots of the court and mural, plus close-ups of the custom party favors. These detail photos matter: parents put a lot of work into them, and you only have a short time to capture them before the kids and guests start enjoying them.

Candid Birthday Photos



I love candid event coverage. I use a long lens to stay out of the way and capture all kinds of photos: families embracing, friends hugging hello, kids devouring their snacks... Here, there's no posing, no "look at the camera." It fills a photo gallery with photos that are unique to every family.

Free Play



If I'm at a basketball facility like Game Point Miami, you can be sure that I'm going to snap photos of the kids and families playing on the court. Parents love seeing their kids dribbling, shooting, and just having a good time with their friends and parents.

Mascot Photos



When the mascot arrived, I shot the candid reactions first, then quick posed photos for the birthday family and guests who wanted photos with him, too.

Coach-led Activities



Almost every venue has a 30-60 minute session with engaging activities and fun things to do for guests. Game Point Miami provided the kids with several games like dodgeball and tug-o-war. Games like these always get kids smiling, jumping, and dancing which make for fun, energetic photos!

Posed Family and Friend Portraits



Every event includes time for posed family portraits and group photos. I keep the posing loose and let the families just have fun. This helps me get two types of photos: the go-to photos that families can print and the ones of the kids rough-housing with their parents and siblings.

Blowing Out the Candles



The cake moment is the must-have birthday photo. I always get a little bit of everything in these shots. One photos of the birthday boy blowing out the candles, another one of the whole family, and a few more of all the kids devouring the pull-apart cupcake.
